What if you could snap a photo by snapping your fingers?

This design concept by Yeon Su Kim would let your fingers act like a remote shutter by Bluetooth connecting to your smartphone.

This is what it would have been like to live 100 years ago without youtube videos, facebook, gadgets, and television to distract us. There is something incredibly moving about the mundaneness and simplicity of The Brothers’ lives.

Internet Week NYC

Internet Week is an annual, week long festival showing off New York’s vibrant web and entrepreneurial community. So far, I’ve been to demos and dinners and met amazing people in the tech industry. The energy at the largest event of the week - NYTech Meetup was incredible.

It’s got me thinking about why the general consensus is that Silicon Valley trumps when it comes to innovation. Sure, while many of the big companies like Apple and Google are headquartered there, New York has some of the newer, most buzzed about startups as well, like Foursquare and Tumblr.

My feeling is that the companies which spring from New York are of a different flavor from those of the West Coast. When I think of Silicon Valley, research-oriented and well-engineered products come to mind. But New York is a powerhouse for the arts, media, and entertainment - and from that breeds creativity and social innovation that is unrivaled.

If Thomas Edison was still alive today, and he looked at the current state of electricity, he would say, “looks just the way I left it about 100 years ago.” On the other hand, if Alexander Graham Bell came back and looked at a cell phone or the Internet, he would say, “what in the world is THAT?!

I recently went to a talk by David Schatsky, former president of JupiterResearch and currently a consultant for internet businesses on sustainability and cleantech. He spoke at length about alternative energy sources, green IT, and the basic need for people to be more aware of their energy consumption, and therefore how exciting the introduction of Smart Meters will be.

Personally, I have no idea how much energy I use until the bill comes at the end of the month. But just as a Prius owner will change his driving behavior to improve the mileage displayed on the dashboard, so too can we reduce our energy wastage with realtime usage information. It’s a new era of Energy 2.0 - two way participation and communication between consumers and their utilities company to create a greener world.
